Matthew 14:13-21

Jesus had just heard the news about John the Baptist and went to be by himself for a while. Instead of getting solitude, he was followed by a great crowd and looked to their needs before dealing with his own grief. He was truly a man of sorrows, but that did not stop him from ministering. This is a great example for us to follow, especially as we deploy or get separated from family. Its OK to be bummed out, but its not OK to let our mood get in the way of our service to The King.

Humility and Anxiety

1 peter 5 was very good discussion. if you missed it, i recommend you read this chapter with a sincere heart. whether being a leader and/or a follower, humility plays a key role in a christian's life. we are called to be humble; but remember, we have to be aware of the devil's tricks about humility. we're not use this concept to get people's attention on us, we are to be servants for Christ with no regards for ourselves. how are you struggling with humility? do have a difficult time putting aside your pride in order to let others be blessed? do have difficulty accepting others' blessing for you due to your pride? and what about anxiety? how do you cast your concerns/worries onto God? do you ball up all your frustrations? or do you go to God first with your problem? do take time to listen for His guidance? this chapter discusses two of the most difficult concepts which humans struggle with. read scripture, pray to the Lord, talk with Godly men/women, and take some quiet time to meditate; and then provide a person with a service. i think you'll be suprised at the results (emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually).

Tonight at the Monday STS we will be discussing Romans 4. This study is open to both Men and Women. The only requirement is that they have a desire to dig deep into the scripture.

Wednesday we will be finishing 1 Peter at the CAC. I look forward to a good discussion about humility as we go through chapter 5.

Finally, I am having a party at my house on Saturday afternoon. Come on out for food games and fellowship. Bring a friend! My only request is that you let me know if you are interested in coming so I know how much food to get.

since we're different from the world, how do we reach our current culture for Christ's glory? we are "suffer" as Jesus did in the flesh? how? everyone will give an account for what we do and don't do, so how are we sharing the Gospel in our daily events? God has given each of us talents, gifts, and/or skills (whether we think so or not), how are we using it/them to share Christ's love. being a nice person, and showing kindness is fine, but are we sharing CHRIST's love? and not to other christians (although that is mandated by scripture), but what about to the person who is against us. take some time out to pray and meditate on three things: a)what is the Gospel b)what are my God-given gifts/talents/skills c)and how do i share the Gospel with these gifts/talents/skills. remember: Love God, Love people; love like JESUS loved.

Just wanted to give you all a quick update on what is going on this week. Jimmy is out of town, but the Wednesday group will still be meeting at the CAC, Hezekiah will be leading a discussion on 1 Pet 3.

On Friday, we will have a farewell BBQ for Derek ; that will be around 1800 at the scout hut.

Next Monday, for those attending the STS, we will be covering Romans 3. The memory verses for next week are 2 Tim 3:16, and Josh 1:8. One of my favorite verses Is Jer 12:5

"If you have raced with men on foot
and they have worn you out,
how can you compete with horses?..."

I especially appreciate this verse when combined with the idea in 1 Corinthians 9:24 of running in such a way as to win the prize.

This is a challenge I often give the men I hang out with. Do you want to spiritually run with men, or with horses? We want to win the prize! So we run like horses with nostrils flaring, frothing at the mouth, stomping the ground knowing that victory is already won. Jesus has made the prize obtainable, because Jesus IS the prize.

I was reminded of this as I ran a race with Hezekiah and Steve. Both of them left me in the dust. Hezekiah even went home with a medal. I confess, I have not been running much at all lately, but that was obvious. If I want to keep up with these guys, I have to train hard every day.

So my exhortation to you guys who feel like you can't keep up with the Christian men around you (in your prayer life, your time in the Word, your witnessing, etc.), don't give up! Some of them are trying to run with horses, ask them how they train, and follow their example. Eventually, you'll start to not only keep up, but set a faster pace.

Timeless application to a timely problem

Hey guys just want to leave a quick little note about my profit of Acts 4:1-22. So in Acts 4 Peter and John are teaching and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees and teachers of the law seek to quite the men, but Peter and John will not be persuaded. They know who they serve and boldly proclaim the word of God. So my profit was that we as servants of the King should not waver in or faith. We should with boldness proclaim the name of Jesus to the lost and the captive. My prayer for the men here in Korea is that God would put a fire in us to be hungry and thirsty for Jesus.

This weekend was an amazing time for me. It definitely tested my trust in God. Jimmy and I spent weeks planning this, Derek bought tons of food. Alan and Jimmy and I all planned on speaking (about Jesus as King, Prophet, and Priest, respectively) to about 20 people.

Unfortunately several of our men who work in the same battalion were put on lock down and sent to the field for the weekend due to circumstances out of their control. The weekend was still a success, but I missed having all those guys out there (we lost about half of the men representing Humphreys at the gathering, including one of our speakers).

I was still greatly encouraged by the guys who came down from Casey. The questions that they asked and the comments that they made showed that this weekend was worth every headache.

Getaway

We are planning a weekend getaway without going away. On August 8th and 9th we will be camping out at Beacon Hill Park. Hopefully this accommodates many of you, as you will not even need to leave post to come and hang out. We'll set up Saturday morning, around 9:00, and be done on Sunday around 2:00 pm.

Vintage Jesus study group

The assignment for Monday is to do an STS on 1 Corinthians 15:1-28. Our memory verse is from that chapter as well, vs 4-8

"Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4)that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, (5)and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. (6)After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. (7)Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, (8)and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born."

A bit longer than most, but the goal is to provide you with an answer as to why you believe that Jesus is alive right now. For me, the most compelling piece of evidence is not simply that these people claimed to see Jesus resurrected, but that they were tortured and died for that truth. No one would be boiled alive or crucified upside-down for a lie.

Luke 2 - Obedience

Normally Luke Chapter 2 is a chapter I just try to push through so I can get to opening Christmas gifts. But after actually sitting down and reading it, I find it is an excellent example of obedience.

There are so many examples of submission in the chapter: Mary submitting to God and to her Husband, Joseph to legal authority, Simeon to religious law and to God, the shepherds to the Lord’s revelation, Mary and Joseph to God’s Law, Anna to God-living in worship, Jesus to the Father, and Jesus to his earthly parents (And I probably missed a few).

True, there are also many great promises to claim in this chapter, but my application is that if I want God to use me more and to reveal more to me, I need to obediently submit more areas of my life to Him.

Be Prepared

2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

2 Tim 4:2, much like Psalm 119:9-11, is a verse that I have memorized to remind me why I memorize scripture. Having God’s word preloaded in your brain is one of the best ways we can “be prepared.” The idea in 2 Tim 4:2 is that we should be able to correct, rebuke and encourage in accordance with the scripture even when it’s not convenient for us. Everyone is ready to pull out a few verses when they sit down at Bible study, or go street witnessing, or have a planed lunch with some mormon missionaries. But to be able to pull out a verse in the middle of a casual conversation at work is invaluable. To have some of God’s promises memorized when you find out the wife of one of your buddies is leaving him can easily be a much greater testimony than “the roman road.”

The greatest impact I have had for the kingdom has always been when I’m able to hit a target of opportunity, not necessarily even a non-believer. I cannot count the times, just in Korea, that I have taken a bro out to coffee and listened to what he’s struggling with, the stupid decision he just made or is about to make, or how he has misunderstood a section of scripture. Having a verse or two handy in those situations to help support a rebuke or an encouragement is absolutely essential. I would venture to say that effective man to man discipleship cannot be accomplished without a preparedness to preach the word all the time.

The Thursday night Bible Study on James will not be meeting on Thursday, June 11th. The new 602nd Chaplain has arrived and we be holding a meet and greet at the bowling alley from 1800 to 2100. The Rider on The White Horse

11I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. It is important for us to include Revelation along with the four Gospels when derive our Christology. A Christology that uses Mathew-John exclusively will paint a picture that is incomplete, leaving Jesus as a humble incarnation and neglecting His glorious exaltation.
I have been reading a book by Mark Driscoll Called “Vintage Jesus.” This weekend I read a delightful explanation of Revelation 19:11-16.

“There Jesus is not revealed as a glass-jawed hippie wearing a dress. Rather he is an ultimate fighter warrior king with a tattoo down his leg who rides into battle against Satan, sin, and death on a trusty horse, just like every decent Western from Pecos Bill to the Rifleman…If we were to see Jesus today, we would see him in glory, not in humility. We would see a Jesus who will never take a beating again, but is coming again to open a can on the unrepentant until there blood flows upon the earth like grapes crushed in the violence of a winepress." (pg. 150)

True Worshipers

I just got back on Monday from a short trip to Brunei. Jonathan and I decided that while we were on vacation in a Muslim country, it would be fun to find a church to go to. And we did! Christianity is not illegal there, however, witnessing is. As a result, it is very hard to find a superficial churchgoer. The worship service was SO refreshing! Nobody was there because of religious obligation. Everyone was praising Jesus, you could just feel the excitement, even though the service was over two hours long. Best of all, I can think of at least 5 countries that were represented just in the people sitting right next to me. It felt like a small glimpse of what heaven will be like.

Your Calling

1Corinthians 7:17-24

God has a calling for each and everyone of us, wherever we are. Paul talks on this subject in his letter to the Corinthians, the area in which God has put each of us is a unique and chosen path by God. Our situations in life that we are in and have gone through give us a story; something we can have and use to teach what He has done for us. Paul was so dead set on this that he went so far to say it was a rule in all of the churches he started. (vs.17) He goes on to talk about if someone is circumcised he shouldn't seek out to remove the marks of it, and if someone is uncircumcised to stay that way also, the factor of being circumcised or not means nothing, it all matters on keeping God's commands, as long as we are remaining in His commands we are doing the will of God no matter where we are. He goes on and talks about how if you are called as a slave you shouldn't worry about it, but if you have the chance to gain your freedom take it. This shows that if you get a chance to move forward in your career or place you are at you should take it, and work toward serving God in that area you were blessed with. Because through Christ we are a freed man, freed from this world and the bonds of sin, but in turn we are slaves of Christ, for we were bought with a price that cannot be repaid, so we must give nothing less than our all. So with that conclusion, wherever you are at, remain in God, and serve Him.

Monday Rain

The weather is changing, but was unable to put a hiatus on our cookout. Our Bible study was refreshing, it has been wonderful learning new ways to study the Word of God. Our reading for this next week is 1 Thes. Chapter 5. Nate will not be available next Monday, so we will be meeting at the CAC at 1800.

Today was also our last Monday to spend with Matt and Andrew, as they will be moving on due to PCS. We will miss you both and know that you will be an inspiration to the units who are receiving you.

I read Ezekiel 18 this morning and, as so often happens, came across a verse that was perfect for a conversation I had with Soldier in my company.

Ez 18:32"For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies," declares the Lord GOD. "Therefore, repent and live."

Question: how can a loving God just sit and smile as he sends people to hell?

Answer: He doesn't smile. He takes no pleasure in it at all! God IS loving, and he has paid the penalty that we owe so that he can remain just and we don't have to die! Repent and Live!

Father Forgive Me

Father please forgive me for what I have done. I have brought guilt and shame upon myself by taking practice in the abuse of your beautiful daughters. Over and over again I have exploited women for my own pleasure, from lusting after women I see to filling my mind with pornographic images. I am a pathetic excuse of a man who follows his youthful lusts by idolizing sex and condoning the abuse your daughters you have entrusted us to love, cherish, and protect. There is no excuse for my dark and dirty behavior; I am just a filthy man who needs washing from the blood of your son, Jesus. I can do nothing without your grace.

So Father I ask You to cleanse me with the blood of Jesus your Son, who you sent to die as a sacrifice for my dark and dirty behavior that is contrary to the rich and full life You intended for me to live. Father I also ask You to restore me to the life You intended for me to live, as I know you have restored Jesus after His death.

Aiming to Achieve

What an excellent opportunity for fellowship and spiritual reflection at the CAC this evening. For those who couldn't attend, we discussed the need of getting ready for "the race." Much like training ourselves to max a PT test, we need to continually train both our study of the Bible and our prayer time with God. We don't always know when the challenge will arise, therefore, we should develop a "workout plan" towards spiritual growth.

"But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified." 1 Cor. 9:27

Saturday the 18th, we will be going on a hiking trip! Plan on meeting at the walk through gate at 0800, transportation will be available. Bring your Bible, necessary clothing, lunch, water and a friend/co-worker. Text Jimmy or Nate and them know we will see you there.

I was meditating on Leviticus 16 this evening. Our sin demands blood. Before Jesus, every year a sacrifice had to be made. One goat had to die, and one had to be chased away with the sins of the camp. The sacrifice was bloody and it was incomplete. It covered past sins, but had to be done over and over again.

But.... Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit (1 Pet 3:18)

Christ was a lamb who made an even greater, more brutal, complete sacrifice. If you tell one lie, if you do one act out of pride, you make the sacrifice a requirement. Its that, or you can go to Hell. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us(Rom 5:8)

If you have an hour, i highly recommend watching the sermon below. Pastor Mark does a great job of showing the connection. By the way, these connections are ALL over the old testament, try looking for them as you do your quiet times.

I mentioned Daily Reflections in a recent e-mail, which is now among the things I check daily. Not surprisingly, the reflections have centered around the events of Holy Week.

I was struck by several things in todays entry for Maundy Thursday. For the most part, it's best to let it speak for itself. The foretelling of Peter's denial tied in with one of the things we discussed last night:

This story is found in all four gospels, where it serves as a warning to self-assured believers. The last word of the would-be saint is “I can handle it.”Jesus is content, however, to leave Peter with the last word in this discussion. Evidently there comes a time when God does not argue with us anymore. He leaves us in our pride and stupidity, not insisting on getting in the last word in His argument. God is not interested in winning arguments with us. Hence the phrase in the Lord's Prayer to "lead us not into temptation, (i.e., trials beyond our ability to handle), but deliver us from evil." A recent Catholic Answers program on exorcism said something similar.The post is rather lengthy, relegated to the archives by now, and unfortunately you have to scroll down a bit to get to April 9th, but very well worth it.

So many dudes so little time!

Once again, I found tonight amazingly refreshing. I guess spending an evening with a bunch of dudes in love with Jesus will do that to you.

As you may have noticed, My living room is getting really crowded (which I love!) so I'm trying to split this up. Fortunately, Ben is starting a Tuesday night Bible study (see the side bar for details). If you are from the Zoeckler Area and tired of making the trek across post, this is the place for you. You are still welcome to come on Monday nights, but I would strongly encourage you to make Tuesdays your priority. This way you can link up with men who are literally seconds away from you when you need them.

The Goal is to have three Men's groups meeting on post by the end of the summer. this way no matter where you are located (MP Hill, Zoeckler station, or "down town") there will be a group of brothers within walking distance. we are one third of the way there with Zoeckler coming into play. MP hill is the next target, pray for some leadership to develop from the Believers within those barracks.

This week at the Monday night study we talked about how God's Word is essential to success, and how it is useful for teaching, reproof, correcting and training.
That's why we are hitting scripture memory so hard right now. If you're new, don't sweat it. we'll get you up to speed. If you're not new, you got no excuse! come prepared to be put on the spot!
Here is a quick list of what you should know:

2 cor 5:17, Gal 2:20, Rom 12:1, John 14:21, Josh 1:8, 2 Tim 3:16

In addition to learning scripture and reviewing what you already know, we are also starting a book study on 1 Thessalonians. Each week we will discuss a different study technique to help you root in the word without being dependant on someone to tell you what it means. This week, read 1Thess as many times as you can. Write down key points, major and minor themes, questions you have, some notes about the people written about, historical settings, etc...

Feel free to use a variety of resources, such as Bible dictionaries, Biblegateway.com, online commentaries, and so on. print off a copy of 1 Thessalonians that you can mark and color and highlight.

Power of Prayer...

A few of us went out to the 'ville' on Saturday night, hitting up all
the bars... Not as most do, but we were hitting all the bars with
prayer. Fighting the spiritual battle of influence on the lives of
soldiers and the lives of women who re in bondage at these
establishments to appease the lusts of men.

One of the more specific prayers was to give them the desire to seek
out Christ rather than trying to satisfy their lusts.

The day after we had two people seeking out fellowship with other
believers... I am hoping this experience was the drop in the bucket to
break loose the pouring out of His Spirit on the Ville and Humphrey's...

welcome back everybody! last week we (the four of us who were not on exercise) talked about how to have long term victory against sin. We used an illustration called C4. And came up with specific applications for each concept and how we can demolish strongholds. and last night we talked about supervising and reproducing.

I just found out about a potential opportunity for you to reproduce, and though it may not ever lead into the one on one type of discipleship that is so necessary, i still see this as a worth while.
its a new ministry Campus Crusade has launched called Global Media Outreach. They are looking for people that can write emails (can be 1, 5 or 10 or whatever) a day for people that write their website about Jesus! It is being an online missionary. You can go to their website at www.GMOJoinUs.com to learn more and also sign up there. I think this would be a great chance for some of us to share our faith with people all over the world if you are willing to put some time each day sharing the gospel with inquirers.

I have never been more grateful for a blizzard than I was this weekend. First let me say that as a guy who went through grade school in Minnesota, I know how to appreciate a good snowday. But what made this one great was the opportunity for discipleship. I virtually spent the whole weekend with Andrew, reading the Word, sharing Illustrations, and scheming how we could go and dig folks out of the snow once the road condition turned from black to red.

That sort of quality one-on-one time is exactly what we have been talking about at the Monday night study the last two weeks. We looked at Jesus’ Process of selection, association, and consecration. Next week we’ll dig into Impartation and Delegation. And if you can think of a few other words that end in “tion” why not through those in the mix too.

Like comeandeatpizzation.

Mission Readiness

Today while I was reading through 1 Peter 1, I came across verse 13 that stood out to me. (KJV) "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;" This verse stood out to me as a reminder that we need to be ready always, ready to fight in a moments notice, ready to run the race when the gun is fired. If we stand about and do not train for that day, we will NOT be ready when it comes, and we might just miss it. I think when Peter is talking here, he is referring to something Christ spoke of in Luke 12:35-40

35 “Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps alight. 36 And be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master shall find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at table, and will come up and wait on them. 38 Whether he comes in the second watch, or even in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. 39 And be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 40 You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect”

Keeping focused on the hope of Christs return requires us to be ready within a moments notice so we are not caught off guard when that day comes. That is OUR MISSION READINESS.

My favorite part: "Rogers' daily routine [was] waking up at 5 a.m.; praying for a few hours for all of his friends and family; studying; writing, making calls and reaching out to every fan who took the time to write him; going for a morning swim; getting on a scale; then really starting his day..."

Hey gentlemen:
Its me again. I just wanted to drop in with my thoughts on the final chapter of Acts. (sad face)
Also, Happy & Safe Holidays to everyone.
I no longer find it strange or unique that Paul ministers to these Jews as he did most all of the other people he spoke to. He uses the same tactics & techniques (and even the same exact words as at other times in many cases).

In verse 23, he spends the whole day with them, "...testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets."
And, we will see another pattern (thanks to Nayte for mentioning this "pattern watching" thing from the very first week so many moths ago) continue as well.

The response to the gospel Paul is sharing. (v24) "And some were convinced and believed what he said, and others did not believe." (v29) " And when he had said these things, the Jews went away, arguing and disputing among themselves."
{So, an encouragement to us in our journey as well. (In reference to Jimmy's last post. Some people just don't believe...at least not YET anyways.) Some plant, some water, but God gives the increase!!!!}

So, the Gospel has the power, we are just the delivery sytem or method if you will.

And lastly, I noticed a blessing or benefit to Paul's obedience in his being such an awesome witness for Christ. (v30) "After this Paul lived there for two entire years [at his own expense] in his own rented lodging, and he welcomed all who came to him, (v31) Preaching to them the kingdom of God and teaching them about the Lord Jesus Christ with boldness and quite openly, and without being molested or hindered. "
He lived out the remaining days of his time there in peace and without much opposition. Praise God for keeping His word to us and for being faithful to complete the work!

I made it safely back to Minnesota, and my son did great on the flight. Actually, he slept better than me; so thanks for your prayers. I read 2 Peter 1 this morning and verse 12 stood out to me. You all know me for coming across as a broken record sometimes (for Example: The Wheel, Pipeline, "How was your quite time," "How can we apply that to our lives?"etc). But I see Peter acted in a similar way, check out verse 12

"So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have."

Even Peter was a broken record when it came to the basics. So I will also remind you constantly of them as well. Especially since not all of the men in our group are "Firmly established." This is why making disciples is so important. By bringing a guy along side you, you can help him become firmly rooted, then the basics can be simply reminded, rather than taught.

So in addition to your discussion that I missed Wednesday, I would say (regardless of what your gifts are), bring a guy with you to see how you execute, and teach him to do likewise.

Commandments of Christ

Wednesday evening there were only five of us (at Nait's house) for "Group Discussion." We talked about Jesus' commandments to love GOD, love people, and make disciples. We also mentioned spiritual gifts. Is it possible not to have the gift of "evangelism" and yet "go and make disciples"? The Holy Spirit has given each Christian with certain gifts that compliment the body of Christ. And we are to glorify the Lord with these gifts to the Church and to the world. So how does one "make disciples"? I guess there are different approaches to witnessing: yelling on a street corners, going from house to house, going to bar to bar, pass out tracts, preaching to everyone you meet anywhere, or to live in such a way that attracts people to Him. But these are just styles of witnessing. But in order to lovingly present Christ to others, we must have a keen relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit by reading God's Word, prayer and meditation, and fellowship with other strong Christians. God's love can reach and attract unbelievers (and encourage weak believers) by showing our love for Him in the first place. Second we show God's love to our families and then to believers, and then finally to the world (unbelievers).
Does being a Christian mean someone is a disciple? I'm not so sure. I've never said the "sinner's prayer" with a nonbeliever so that he/she was saved. I've never made a "disciple" or baptized anyone. Does this mean I haven't fulfilled my "Great Commission?" Do I need the "gift" of evangelism to obey this commandment?
In tonight's discussion, I've come to understand that I can live my life in an obedient, loving way that Christ emulated; and the Holy Spirit may prick someone's heart/mind to inquire about my attitude/behavior. Then I have the opportunity to share the Gospel, and pray he/she will accept this journey walk of Faith with Jesus. But I must speak God's word, because my silence will not project the true reason for this joy I have.
Well I know one thing for sure, God wants to me to share, with everyone I can, this beautiful love Jesus and I have for each other. Jesus said (Jn 13:34-35): "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; Matthew 22:36-40

I have truly been encouraged this evening.

CHRIST-Psalm 25:9

Christ provides direction for the humble

PRAYER-2Chron 7:14
One must be humble for God to receive his prayers

WORD-Prov 8:13
This verse is spoken from wisdoms point of view. To gain the wisdom one seeks from the word, he must be humble. If you think you know it all, you wouldn’t even bother opening up the bible.

FELLOWSHIP-Eph 4:1-3
Humility is part of unity with the body. No one likes hanging out with an arrogant jerk, or a walking pity party.

WITNESS- Rom 12:16
In order to witness to everybody one must be willing to associate with those in low positions. In Matt 11:29 we see that Christ used humility to attract people to Him, we too should use humility to attract people to Him. No one likes hanging out with an arrogant jerk, or a walking pity party.

OBEDIENT CHRISTIAN- Phil 2:8
Christ humbled Himself and became obedient to the cross, we need to humble ourselves and become obedient to him.

So what is humility? Humility is the opposite of pride, for one. Read this list of what pride is, and assume the opposite defines Humility. Pride is…
1) Self Satisfaction (Hosea 13:4-6)
2) Self sufficiency/reliance (Duet 8:11-17)
3) Considers itself above instruction (Jer 13:9-10)
4) Insubordinate (psalm 119:21)
5) Takes credit for what God does (Daniel 4)
6) Exults in being made much of (Matt 23:6)
7) Aspires to the place of God (Acts 12:22-23
8) Opposes the very existence of God (Psalm 10:4)
9) Refuses to trust in God (Prov 28:25)
10) Anxious about the future (Is 51:12-13)

Why be humble?

1 Pet 5:5-7 tells in three ways to be humble. It also points out that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”
What could be worse than God Himself opposing you, and what could be better than receiving His grace?
In the same thought he adds, “cast all your anxieties on Him…” its important to note the context of this verse, because he is describing how to be humble. Trusting in God, not self, is the antithesis of pride and is at the very root of humility.

Other little notes on humility:

Humility is not a performance of virtue that earns grace, it is a confession of emptiness that receives grace. (John Piper) in other words, Blessed are the poor in spirit (Jesus)

High self esteem=high pride, Low self esteem=high pride. Humility is not thinking poorly of yourself, its understanding what God thinks of you (Psalm 139:13-16). Its realizing, also that there is nothing about you that is worth boasting about (1Cor 1:31)

Finally, if you’re proud, there is a (not so pleasant) fix. God will release you from your pride (Dan 4:33-37)

Houghton here. Just chiming in with my 2 cents, as promised.

I just have one one thing to point out that stands out to me, and always has for as long as I have read this passage.

Verse 28 - The reply KING AGRIPPA gives to Paul's question.

(I looked at 8 different translations. Most of them agree with this paraphrase)

"...You have almost persuaded me to be a Christian"

What a sad statement, overflowing with despair. Here is a King, a man of royalty - with absolutely no hope. He ALMOST becomes a convert. But, not quite. How sad!

How many people do we know & work with & live with & go to church with that share the same response when confronted with a genuine opportunity to become a life-long God follower?

It is so sad, and such a true glimpse of what humanity is suffering from today as well.

what an interesting discussion! i love it when christians get together to discuss personal issues. i love it even more when my heart is encouraged, and i learn more about our awesome, loving GOD the Father Almighty. for those that were not there, let me share: first we were at the cac, and boy was it packed with families looking for santa. so we decided to sit at starbucks (overcoming obstacles to meet). we talked about what we think it means to be a "christian." a person who said the "sinners" prayer, and soon lives sinfully; a person who accepted Christ, goes to church regularly, is a nice person, etc; and a person who actively, passionately serves Christ; are all christians? i say yes, but who am i? what do you think are the attributes/characteristics of a christian? is "once saved, always saved" a true phrase? are the children of God who truly served Him on this earth receive a crown in glory, and those who are "saved" just get to live in paradise? does it really matter!? no, i dont think so. what truly matters, i believe, is that as a christian i am commanded to love GOD with my all, and to love people as Christ exemplified in the scriptures (Holy Bible). and i believe these commandments must be obeyed in word and action. i'm truly encouraged and joyful to hear christians who overcome self and fear to live this way in our present world. i hope that my christian brothers will rebuke, correct, train, and teach me back onto the path of righteousness when i stray. brothers, you have my complete permission to do so.

Thanksgiving

I pray everyone had someone special to spend the Thanksgiving weekend with. I hope we all remember to give GOD all the praise, honor, glory, and thanks through CHRIST JESUS for His unconditional and gracious love. For without His sacrificial love, we would be hoplessly dead and have only pain/suffering. But through CHRIST's willingness to accept our pain/suffering and death; we are alive, joyful and hopeful. Let's count our blessings, there are more than a few.

My Testimony

My dad is a preacher. One night when I was nine, I heard one of his sermons. He was speaking about hell, and I was afraid. I didn't want to go there (hell). So I decided to accept JESUS into my life and be baptized. I did all the "church" rules as a kid: go to church often, memorize bible stories, sing in choirs, etc. I did them because of "rules." Once I left to go to college, I decided to do what I wanted. In Luke 15, we read the story of " the prodigal son." I went off into the world (new orleans) and lived the "sinful" life: sex, drugs, alcohol, parties, profanity, etc. It's truly GOD that I didn't die, been arrested, obtain a disease, or have children. I joined the Army thinking I could resolve my guilt and problems. But the feeling of guilt was always there, and I continued to live wildly trying to overcome my feelings (and to run away from GOD). I pretended to have everything I wanted. One day at a club I met Michele. I invited her to my apartment for a date. I must admit my intentions with her were purely physical. She happened to see my Bible and a Cross on my wall, and asked "Are you a Christian?" I was in shock. I couldn't answer her without stuttering. She said she had questions about Christianity. I knew then that JESUS was calling me. And like the story in Luke 15, I came to a realization I needed to go back to my FATHER (I was 26). So I went to church (feeling this heavy weight on my chest) and cried to GOD. And I could sense Him saying, "Welcome home son, I've missed you" and felt Him hug me. Now I try my earnest to be closer to JESUS by reading The Bible: learning more about this pursuing, forgiving, and gracious GOD through JESUS CHRIST. I know that GOD desires us to love Him with our all, and to love people JESUS's way. I try to show my gratitude for His unconditional acceptance of my flawed soul. Thanks GOD for Your great Love through JESUS CHRIST.

Dont be a tool

Before I became a Christian, I used to play drums for church and youth group. Was this Labor, or even worship? By doing it, I was helping bring others to God and helping them worship in the form of music, but was I a laborer? no. I was a tool, and a prideful one at that.
Take a look at Isiah 10. The Assyrians were being used to punish Israel, and ultimately to bring them to such great distress that they turn back to God. But look at what happens in verse 5; the pride of Assyria is revealed and we see that Assyria's intent was not to bring Israel to God, but to destroy just for kicks.
My goal was not to lead worship, but to get compliments for my skill on the trap set. Read verse 15. A tool has nothing to boast in, an ax cannot raise itself above the one who swings it. Fast Forward-- I still play the drums at church. Am I still a tool? no! With Christ as my savior, i am free to labor for him, and not be punished for my pride (because I'm free from that too). My service is for His glory not my own. I have an inheritance with Christ, I labor as an act of worship and thanksgiving. Though I once took great pride in keeping rhythm, I now find complements strangely awkward. I recognize my gifts as both from and for Jesus.
If you must compliment anyone, compliment Jesus; because if I'm going to brag about anyone, Its going to be Jesus.

I'll be handing out some flash cards to help you with scripture memory, in preparation for the hypothetical "5 min. on the bus," when you can put your testimony to use. Hope to see you all then!

God's Word

It's got to be about a daily dose of GOD's word, especially the Gospels. Psalm 1:1-2, "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night." JESUS CHRIST is our guide and example: John 15:9-12, JESUS loves us with His life, so we must love each other (with our lives).

Wednesday at the CAC

I enjoy so much tonight's gathering. I love it when meet to and encourage each other. Talking about who JESUS CHRIST is, and what it truly means to be a Christian man, is so uplifting. I so desire to be pleasing in GOD's eyes, and I know that He enjoys when we take time to get to know Him through JESUS and the Bible.
On Friday nights we meet at my place for food and laughs, then we play some pool or pingpong. Let's hang out again this week!! Heb 10:24,25

Thanksgiving at the Bliss House

For all y'all who are going to be at the Hump for Thanksgiving, consider yourself (and your friends) invited to my place.

The only catch is that we need food!

Right now I have people signed up to bring:
-Turkey
-Green Bean Casserole
-Stuffing
-"A nice" pumpkin pie. (Thanks Matt for guaranteeing the quality of said pie, I'm gonna hold you to it).

learn to do good

Most Christians will readily recognize the verse 2Tim 3:16 (All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,). But many forget about the comma and the importance of the next verse.

Gal 6:9-10 says “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

And 2 Tim 3:17 gives us a great clue as to how we can learn to accomplish that command. It says, “so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

So I say to any man who wants to go and do good and not “waste his time” with reading the bible: You cant do good without reading the bible, at least not well.

Bible Study Blog

The purpose of this blog is to have way to keep in touch with men who already attend Monday night Bible study; to inform them of upcoming events, and to post a meditation or two. Also I'm hoping that this blog can be used as a tool to help folks find us.
